Oregon City, OR

Oregon City, OR man smiling about his successful root canal procedure by his dentist.A tooth infection is a common dental problem that can occur anytime and affect any person. The infection, which affects the inner soft tissues of the tooth (pulp and nerve) can be extremely painful. If left untreated, it can also lead to an abscess forming around the tooth, an ultimately, the loss of the tooth. Fortunately, there are several solutions to a tooth infection, top among them being root canal treatment. At Beavercreek Dental, we offer root canal treatment to help save your tooth before it is too late.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that helps to save an infected tooth. The treatment focus on repairing the root canal – the natural cavity within the center of a tooth, which holds the pulp and the tooth nerves. When a tooth decays or becomes infected, it is these nerves and the pulp which becomes infected.

Reasons for Root Canal Treatment

There are many reasons why you would need a root canal treatment:
A deep level of tooth decay that has reached the soft tissue inside the tooth
•  Injury to the tooth that has damaged the pulp
•  Cracks or chips in the tooth that have caused damage to the pulp
•  An abscess around the tooth due to an infection
•  Inflammation of the tooth's pulp caused by large filling
•  Inflammation or infection of the pulp due to repeated dental procedures

Root Canal Procedure and Recovery

A root canal procedure starts with the diagnosis of the affected tooth, which is done by considering the symptoms and other dental examination techniques such as X-rays and tests. After the diagnosis, root canal treatment commences if the pulp has an infection and has irreversible inflammation.

The root canal procedure is carried out under local anesthesia. It involves drilling the affected tooth with a dental drill to create an access hole. The position of the access hole is dependent on the type of teeth: on the chewing surface of the posterior teeth and into the tongue surface of the anterior teeth.

After creating the access hole, the pulp, decaying nerve tissue, and other contents in the root canal are removed. The root canal cavity is then properly cleaned by scraping the sides and washing away the debris an antimicrobial solution to eliminate the infection. After cleansing, the root canal is sealed, and then a filling is placed in the access hole.

If the root canal procedure is being performed on your posterior teeth, a dental crown is placed on the top of the tooth. The crown helps to add a layer of protection to the tooth, thus preventing cracks and fracture due to the pressure when chewing. (The crown is placed a few weeks after the root canal procedure when the tooth has healed).

After the root canal treatment, parts of your mouth – lips and gums – can remain number due to the anesthesia, but normal feeling returns when it wears off after a few hours. However, this can lead to throbbing pain, which is treated with pain medication. The pain usually lasts a day or two.

An infected tooth can cause you some problems, from unbearable pain to tooth loss. However, with root canal treatment, you can save your tooth and preserve your natural smile.
